Raglan Volunteer Coastguard grew out of Raglan Sea Rescue which was a community rescue service formed by local fisherman  and other individuals to assist water users and boaties in distress. We deliver SAR (Search and Rescue) and breakdown assistance to recreational and commercial mariners on the west coast of the North Island from Port Waikato in the north to Mokau in the south.

Our present capability comprises a 11m Scott Robson twin hull powered by two 500Hp Yanmar diesel engines with twin jet units(Gallagher Rescue) together with two Waverunner Yamaha 1800cc jetskis (Rylock Waikato Rescue I and Rylock Waikato Rescue 2).

In the past Raglan unit operated a 6 metre aluminium, purpose built rescue vessel powered by a 5L V8 running on av-gas driving a Hamilton waterjet unit (Miss Raglan Rescue, launched in 1979) and a 12 metre Waverley class (ex RNLI) DRV which was replaced in 2000.

Our crew are required to undertake rigorous physical training, professional learning and operational qualification to be active in the unit. In water survivability training is compulsory and involves a group swim to shore after being put in the water from Gallagher Rescue outside the Bar zone.

We take part annually in a SAREX (Search and Rescue Exercise) which involves all local community emergency services as well as Waikato Police SAR  and Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

Twice a year, public education Bar Day Safety Courses are run, based in Raglan and comprise a classroom session followed by a trip on Gallagher Rescue to transit the Raglan Bar. The Bar Safety Day has been held for approximately 20 years as a Raglan Volunteer Coastguard initiative which is unique nationally.
